"A member of company E had
just finished making out the company's payroll, when a Minie ball , coming
through his shelter tent, stuck him in the side and killed him almost
instantly. His life-blood flowed over the payroll, which was forwarded
to Washington as issued with the remark on the margin opposite the dead
soldier's name 'killed while marking out this roll, which is sealed with
his blood'."
